Our projects in Uganda

Soul Fishing Ministries

Soul Fishing Ministries (SFM) is a National, Non – Governmental Organization that began in June 1999. Rev. Richard Davis Matovu, an ordained minister, received the vision to create a Christian organization that would be engaged in preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ while working towards alleviating the poverty prevalent in the rural areas of Uganda.

Nexus Seminary Uganda

Nexus is a certificate level training program designed for rural Ugandan pastors. It includes 20 courses taught once a month over a two year span. The goal is to train 2,000 pastors in 20 years. 44 students graduated in Kikyusa, Uganda, in October 2011, which put the seminary just short of the 200 mark.

Wells of Love

A critical issue of life in Uganda, East Africa is the availability of clean and fresh water. Many of the villages that our teams have visited over the years lack this basic and essential element. Because they are drinking contaminated or unclean water, many water borne illnesses are prevalent in these villages.

October

In October of 2011, our pastor, Rev. Dr. B.J. Norrix, took his annual trip to Uganda along with Rev. Linda Prell (Associate Pastor at Christ Community UMC), Rev. Clair Mosher (Onatavia and Erieville UMCs), Barbara Walter (retired teacher), and Kathy Walter (ESL specialist).

Pastor B.J. and the team left October 9 and returned October 27. While they were on the mission field they…:

  • Taught teachers
  • Preached
  • Worked with Nexus Seminary students
  • Dedicated a water well
  • Whatever else the Ugandans had for them

September

In September 2012 a team of Western and Central New Yorkers traveled to Uganda to continue our work with Soul Fishing Ministries and the Nexus Seminary Uganda.

Rev. Dr. B.J. Norrix and Rev. Clair Mosher worked on teaching and preaching and with the students in training of Nexus Seminary. They also participated in the graduation of the students from Nexus Seminary Uganda.

Kathryn Weaver and Esther Keeney are Registered Nurses who worked with rural health centers on matters of nutrition and hygiene. They brought medical supplies, microscopes, and funding to purchase medicines locally.

The team was also joined by John Miller, town of Amherst Police Officer. Because of his “first response” training, John worked with the medical team and the local clinics.

In August 2017, four people from Christ Church and two friends went to Uganda, Africa for a two week mission trip!
